Happy New Year, Puzzlers! As we step into 2025, the world of puzzling is more vibrant and dynamic than ever. From innovative technologies to sustainable practices and community-driven events, this year promises to be an exciting time for puzzle enthusiasts.
Here are my top five trend predictions for the year ahead, showcasing the incredible growth and evolution of puzzle culture.
1. A New Wave of Puzzlers and Businesses
I think we’ll see the puzzle community and industry thriving like never before. The pandemic-era revival of puzzles has evolved into a sustained cultural phenomenon, attracting new audiences across diverse age groups and demographics. I believe this growth is driven by puzzles’ ability to address modern challenges, offering a pause from our busy, digital lives. The experienced benefits of puzzling are vast – stress relief, improved problem-solving skills, and sheer entertainment make it a beloved activity for many.
The surge in popularity has spurred the emergence of new businesses, ranging from boutique brands offering artisanal designs to subscription services catering to niche interests. This extends beyond manufacturing and retail, with innovations like speed puzzle coaching and unique event concepts entering the market, not forgetting the content creators and puzzle influencers. At the same time, media visibility for puzzles has skyrocketed, with puzzles featured in lifestyle articles, social media content, and even competitive sports coverage. Puzzles are no longer just a pastime – they have become a cultural and commercial movement.
2. The Rise of AI
Artificial intelligence continues to reshape the puzzle landscape, particularly in the realm of design. Last year, we saw the introduction of AI-generated puzzles, and in 2025, this trend is gaining momentum. I believe we’re going to see more companies releasing collections featuring stunning designs crafted by AI, making puzzles more accessible through cost-effective production processes.
However, this trend isn’t without controversy: there’s concerns about AI infringing on existing works and this is linked to legal and ethical concerns. In addition, the use of AI art can affect traditional artists and photographers' livelihood. Personally I see AI images as a continuity to the use of image bank pictures. I believe AI images will replace stock photos, which might affect licensing companies' business in addition to artists. To mitigate these concerns, regulation will be crucial, and I’m optimistic about seeing governmental actions addressing AI's ethical use this year.
The puzzle AI debate highlights a larger cultural conversation about the balance between technology and tradition in creative industries and it has led to a counter trend, the appreciation of artists, creating a division within the puzzle community. Many puzzlers value the creativity and storytelling of artists, and there’s an emerging demand for premium puzzles featuring independent artworks. I believe both trends will coexist, which might narrow the mid-priced puzzle selection making the market divided between affordable, mass-produced AI designs and premium puzzles celebrating artistry. I also think the key will be transparency. If a puzzle is AI-generated, the companies should make that clear on the box – if it’s artist-designed, let’s celebrate that in the branding. That way, puzzlers can make informed choices that fit their budget and values.
3. The Evolving World of Speed Puzzling
The world of competitive puzzling is reaching new heights this year. The World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship (WJPC) is set to be the largest ever, with record-breaking participation from seasoned veterans and new speed puzzlers. As expected, this year’s event is held in Valladolid, and it’s doubling in size compared to 2024, showcasing the explosive growth of the sport. And it’s not just the WJPC. There's increased demand for both local and international on-site and online puzzle competitions all around the globe. For instance, we’ll see the first ever European Championships this year, Euro Jigsaw Jam -competitions have become incredibly popular worldwide and there’s rumours of Nordic Championships circulating.
To keep pace with the growth of the sport, the newly established International Speed Puzzling Advisory Committee (ISPAC) is going to share best practices and offer guidance to competition organizers, aiming to ensure fairness and consistency across competitions. This is great, because the rules have varied between competitions and they’ve changed from year to year. For instance, according to the current WJPC 2025 rules, there’s a new element of strategy coming to individual and pair competition: in the first round, each contestant must choose a puzzle from two options, but contestants will be ranked based on their time no matter what puzzle they choose to do. This is something we’ve seen in the teams competition, but it’s now applied to all categories. Making the right choice is critical to success and the contestants have to adapt their training: it's important to analyze strengths and performance on different types of puzzles while preparing for the competition, in addition to practicing speed. The WJPC first round puzzles are again going to be published ones, which means the possibility that contestants have done one of the offered puzzles increases. I’m interested in seeing how this affects the results, because we already know that the use of published puzzles in the first rounds of the competition has given somewhat advantage to European puzzlers who had access to the puzzles before the competition.
I believe in the long run we’re going to see speed puzzling evolving into a highly organized sport and now we’re taking the first steps towards this direction and building the foundation. It’s shaping up to be an interesting and groundbreaking year for the sport!
4. Holistically Sustainable Puzzling
I predict sustainability remains a top priority in the puzzle industry as puzzle enthusiasts are increasingly seeking out brands that align with their values, pushing the industry to prioritize sustainability across the board.
Last year, we saw Ravensburger introducing new eco-friendlier packaging, and this year, it’s set to be a standard in the industry as they are one of the biggest companies and trendsetters in the industry. So I expect more brands are going to adopt eco-friendly practices: introducing smaller boxes, plastic free packaging and exploring materials like recycled paper and soy-based inks.
But sustainability goes beyond being environmentally friendly. In 2025, I hope to see greater attention on social and economic responsibilities. I would love to see more discussion on ethical labor conditions (where the puzzles are produced, how employees are taken care of, what’s the effect on local communities); circular economy principles (how can we lengthen the life cycle of puzzles and avoid one time use); the economic sustainability (what’s the aim of the business, is the business model sustainable, are taxes paid accordingly); equity, diversity, and inclusion (who designs the puzzles, who’s stories are told, do we have representation in the artworks); and user-friendly designs (how are individuals with disabilities taken into consideration). Just to name a few important themes...
The shift toward holistic sustainability – environmental, social, and economic – has the power to revolutionize the puzzle industry, setting a new standard for what it truly means to create puzzles with purpose and integrity.
5. Shared Puzzling Experiences
Last, but not least, I think 2025 is going to be the year of togetherness in puzzling. I predict collaborative puzzling is experiencing a major boom this year and the rise of collaborative puzzling reflects a broader cultural trend: people are seeking ways to engage meaningfully with others in an increasingly digital world. As you probably know, puzzles are great for bringing people together, because they offer a way to interact with others without the pressure of constant conversation.
There’s a huge demand for and I believe online and in-person puzzle events are going to be more popular than ever. I’m eager to see new puzzle associations, clubs, businesses, initiatives and meetups dedicated to collaborative puzzling springing up worldwide, creating spaces where enthusiasts can connect, collaborate, and compete. Whether it’s virtual tournaments or local puzzle nights, these gatherings foster a sense of togetherness – as you might know, there’s nothing better than sharing your passion for puzzles with others like minded.
So there you have it – my top five trend predictions for puzzling in 2025:
A wave of new puzzlers and businesses, expanding the market and driving innovation.
The rise of AI in puzzle design, offering affordability but stirring debate around ethics and artistry.
The evolving world of speed puzzling, with bigger competitions, more competitions and more standardized rules.
A focus on holistic sustainability, from eco-friendly materials to fair labor practices and inclusivity.
A push for shared puzzling experiences, building community and bringing people together.
How do you feel about AI-designed puzzles, are they the future or a threat to traditional artistry? Do you see speed puzzling as a serious sport or more of a fun pastime? What changes would you like to see in sustainability efforts from major puzzle brands this year? Let me know in the comments.
